Installing upper cabinets first allows better access for lifting the cabinets in place, whether you use extra manpower or special tools such as cabinet lifts. But installing lowers first can also have advantages.

The height of the ceiling in your kitchen is probably the most straightforward indicator of how tall your kitchen cabinets should be. The cabinetry including trim does not go to the ceiling. Typically the wall cabinets and trim will be just below the ceiling.

  • Start by attaching a straight 1-by-4 ledger level on the wall at the 54-inch line.
  • Begin your installation with a corner cabinet, or from the far left if you don’t have a corner unit.
